How to Monitor WordPress Forms (and What a Weekly Check Can’t Tell You)

A form can load, accept input and show “Thank you” while the message never reaches anyone. What a weekly check covers, and where the line sits.

For many business websites, the contact or enquiry form is the whole point. It is also one of the easiest things to break without noticing: nothing looks wrong, the page loads, and the silence is only explained weeks later.

That is why our plans include a weekly automated check of one nominated form. This note explains what that check does, why it is limited to one form, and what it deliberately doesn’t claim to prove.

Why forms fail quietly

A form depends on more moving parts than it seems. Any one of them can change without a visible error:

  • A form or spam-protection plugin update changes a field or a setting.
  • A script conflict stops the submit button working on some devices.
  • An API key or connected account expires.
  • Email sending changes at the host, and messages start landing in spam — or nowhere.

None of these take the site down, so uptime monitoring won’t notice them.

What the weekly check does

Once a week, an automated browser visits the agreed form, fills in test values, submits it and looks for the confirmation state — the thank-you message or page that should appear. If the journey fails, we get an alert and investigate.

It is a check of the journey on the page: that the form loads, accepts input and reports success.

Why one form, and why “where it can be tested safely”

Every automated submission is a real submission as far as the site is concerned. It may create an entry, send an email, add a contact to a CRM or trigger a paid automation. So we agree on one form that matters most and can be tested without side effects — with a designated test recipient, and test values that are easy to recognise and filter.

What the check can’t tell you

A successful form check proves the page did its part. It does not prove everything that happens afterwards:

  • that the notification email reached the right inbox rather than spam,
  • that the entry arrived in your CRM with the right fields,
  • that any follow-up automation ran.

Those can be tested too, but they need an agreed end-to-end setup with the services involved. We keep that line clear, so a green check never gives false comfort.

A word on email delivery

Many “broken forms” are really email problems — see why WordPress forms stop sending email for the full fix. WordPress sends mail through the server by default, and messages sent that way are more likely to be filtered. Sending through a proper email service, with the domain’s SPF, DKIM and DMARC records set up, makes delivery far more dependable. It’s a one-time setup worth checking on almost any business site.

What you can do

  • Every so often, send yourself a real enquiry from a phone and see where it lands.
  • Check your spam folder for form notifications now and then.
  • Tell us when the people who receive enquiries change, so notifications keep going to the right place.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my WordPress form stopped working?

Submit it yourself regularly, check whether entries are saved, and watch for a sudden drop in enquiries. An automated weekly check catches page-side failures without anyone having to remember.

Does uptime monitoring check forms?

No. Uptime monitoring only confirms the site responds. A form can fail while the site is fully online.

Will automated tests create fake leads?

They can, unless test submissions are clearly marked and sent to a test recipient. Agree how they’re identified before switching checks on.

Can you check that form emails reach my inbox?

It’s possible with an agreed end-to-end setup, but it’s a separate check from confirming the form itself works.
